FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that he will seek re-election in 2027, setting the stage for another contest for the leadership of world football’s governing body.
Infantino, who has been FIFA president since 2016, is seeking a fourth term in office. FIFA has reaffirmed that his plans to contest the election remain unchanged.
The election is scheduled to take place at the FIFA Congress in Rabat, Morocco, in March 2027. Candidates are required to submit their nominations by November 18, 2026.
Infantino’s decision comes at a time when his leadership is facing increased opposition from some of football’s major confederations.
UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF have expressed opposition to his leadership following disagreements over a number of issues, including a controversial proposal to sell a stake in FIFA’s commercial operations to private investors. The proposal was eventually abandoned after facing significant resistance.
Despite the criticism, Infantino continues to enjoy support from several influential football associations, including the Confederation of African Football and South America’s CONMEBOL.
No other candidate has formally declared a bid for the FIFA presidency so far, although CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani has been mentioned as a possible challenger.
Infantino was first elected FIFA president in 2016 and was re-elected in 2019 and 2023. If he wins the 2027 election, he would remain in office until 2031.
The upcoming election is therefore expected to be closely watched as Infantino attempts to secure another term while facing growing criticism from sections of the international football community.
For now, the FIFA president remains determined to continue his tenure, with the campaign expected to intensify as the November nomination deadline approaches.
