The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has resigned from office alongside the federation’s General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, and members of the Executive Committee.
Gusau announced his resignation on Thursday, August 27, 2026, during a press conference at the NFF headquarters in Abuja.
The development comes amid growing criticism of the administration following a series of disappointing results involving Nigeria’s national teams.
The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing to the Democratic Republic of Congo in a penalty shootout, while the Super Falcons also missed out on qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Gusau said his decision followed consultations with his family, friends and stakeholders within Nigerian football. He explained that stepping aside would give other Nigerians an opportunity to contribute to the development of the country’s football.
His resignation has also created uncertainty around the NFF’s scheduled elective congress, which was expected to take place in September.
Following the leadership changes, the National Sports Commission has moved to establish an interim arrangement for the federation. Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme has been endorsed as acting NFF General Secretary, while Dr Ademola Olajire is expected to serve as acting Deputy General Secretary.
The mass resignation represents one of the most significant leadership changes in Nigerian football in recent years and is expected to pave the way for a broader restructuring of the NFF.
