Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have attacked the convoy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio, along the Kareto–Damasak Road.
The attack reportedly occurred on Thursday as Gubio and members of his entourage were returning to Maiduguri after a visit to Damasak.
According to reports, the attackers planted an improvised explosive device (IED) along the highway, which detonated as a security vehicle leading the convoy passed over the device.
The explosion reportedly damaged the vehicle, after which the suspected terrorists opened fire on the convoy.
Security personnel attached to the convoy, including military and police operatives and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, responded to the attack and engaged the assailants.
Convoy escapes attack
The security response forced the attackers to retreat into the surrounding bush, allowing the convoy to be moved to a safer location.
The Nigeria Police Force later confirmed that a convoy carrying a gubernatorial aspirant, government officials and other political stakeholders had come under attack along the route.
The police said the attackers used an IED and rocket-propelled grenades but were repelled by tactical operatives.
No casualties were recorded among those in the convoy, according to the police account.
Dangerous route
The Kareto–Damasak corridor is located in an area of Borno that has experienced repeated attacks by insurgents.
The latest incident highlights the continuing security challenges facing residents, travellers and political actors operating in parts of the state.
The attack also comes amid renewed military operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters across Borno, with security forces reporting several recent operations aimed at degrading terrorist groups and restricting their movements.
Security agencies have continued efforts to clear affected areas and prevent further attacks as political activities increase ahead of the 2027 elections.
