United States President Donald Trump has acknowledged that the ongoing war involving Iran contributed to the Republican Party’s poor performance in the November 3 midterm elections.
Trump made the admission during a telephone interview with Fox News on Wednesday, November 4, while reacting to the Democrats’ significant electoral gains.
“I think a part of it was Iran, but at the same time, people understood the importance of what I’ve done with Iran,” the president said.
The Republican Party suffered major setbacks in the elections, with Democrats winning control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, giving them greater influence over the country’s legislative agenda during the final two years of Trump’s presidency.
The conflict with Iran had become a major campaign issue, particularly as rising oil prices and the resulting increase in fuel costs heightened economic concerns among American voters.
Despite acknowledging the war’s impact on the election outcome, Trump defended his decision to take military action against Iran, insisting that his administration had acted in the national interest.
The president also dismissed suggestions that the election results represented a personal rejection of his leadership, arguing that he was not directly on the ballot.
Trump, however, indicated that he was prepared to use his presidential veto power against legislation introduced by Democrats, although he expressed willingness to work with them on certain issues.
The election results mark a significant political setback for Republicans and could complicate the administration’s legislative priorities for the remainder of Trump’s term.
