Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has said he bears no hatred or resentment towards former colleagues, friends and associates who have chosen not to support him during his current difficulties.

El-Rufai made the statement in a message titled “My Relationships and the Aftermath,” which he published on his X account on Wednesday.

The former governor said his decision to support people and causes over the years was driven by his faith, upbringing, personal values and conscience rather than expectations of gratitude or reciprocity.

According to him, people he previously supported have the right to decide how they respond to his present circumstances.

“Those I have supported are free to make their own choices now that circumstances are reversed,” El-Rufai said.

He acknowledged that some people may speak in his support, while others may remain silent, distance themselves from previous relationships or deny past associations.

The former governor said he did not wish to judge anyone simply because their response differed from what he or others might have expected.

El-Rufai said the experiences of recent months had also prompted him to reflect on some of his relationships.

He noted that adversity can reveal the nature of relationships and said he might reconsider some associations in light of what he has experienced.

However, he stressed that such reflection should not be interpreted as condemnation.

“That is neither reproach nor condemnation; it is simply part of seeing people, and life, more clearly,” he said.

El-Rufai also said he had no regrets about standing by people or causes when he believed it was the right thing to do.

“I have no regrets about standing by people or for causes when I believed it was right to do so, and I bear no resentment towards anyone who chooses not to do the same for me,” he said.

On what he described as any injustice, ingratitude or injury against him, the former governor said he would not seek revenge or retribution.

He said he was leaving ultimate accountability to Almighty Allah and would continue to focus on remaining at peace with his conscience.

“In the end, each of us must live with the choices we make, and posterity will render whatever verdict it sees fit,” El-Rufai said.

The statement comes amid the former governor’s ongoing legal difficulties and his criticism of how some former associates have responded to his situation. His comments, however, did not identify specific individuals he believed had abandoned him.
