A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel in Ekpoma, Edo State, with three people arrested in connection with the incident.

The incident occurred on Sunday, October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.

According to the Edo State Police Command, Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob. The police said the lecturer later sent the woman out to purchase water.

Upon her return, she reportedly found Uwuigbe unresponsive in the room and the matter was subsequently reported to the police at about 8 p.m.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident and said the hotel owner, manager and the woman who had been with the lecturer were taken into custody as investigations continue.

The lecturer’s remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, AAU confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but clarified that the incident occurred outside the university premises.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, said the woman involved was not a student of the institution and described the incident as a private matter.

Police investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
