Conflicting results have emerged from the All Progressives Congress (APC) rerun senatorial primary for Zamfara North, with separate party officials declaring different winners of the exercise held on Monday, November 2, 2026.
Senator Sahabi Alhaji Ya’u was declared winner by the chairman of the APC Senatorial Primary Election Committee for the district, Dr Auwal Abdullahi Aliyu, who announced that Ya’u secured 49,176 votes.
According to the results he presented in Gusau, Alhaji Tijjani Yahaya scored 9,628 votes, while Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi received 2,602 votes.
However, a separate returning officer, Sani Abdullahi, announced a different result, declaring former senator Tijjani Yahaya Kaura the winner with 16,758 votes. In that declaration, incumbent Senator Ya’u polled 1,465 votes, while Shinkafi secured 1,447 votes.
The conflicting declarations have created uncertainty over who will represent the APC in the 2027 Zamfara North senatorial election.
The rerun followed a court-ordered cancellation of the party’s earlier primary after a legal challenge by Shinkafi. The Court of Appeal sitting in Sokoto upheld the order for a fresh exercise on October 20.
Reports also indicate that the rerun was disrupted by violence at some voting locations in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area.
The APC’s national leadership will need to clarify the conflicting declarations and establish the party’s officially recognised candidate.
