The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Nigerians to emulate American voters by using the 2027 general elections to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over economic hardship, insecurity and declining living standards.
The party made the call while reacting to the outcome of the 2026 United States midterm elections, in which the opposition Democratic Party recorded significant victories against President Donald Trump’s Republican Party.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the American elections demonstrated that voters could use the ballot box to hold political leaders accountable, regardless of their political positions.
The opposition party argued that Nigerians should prioritise their welfare and living conditions when choosing their leaders rather than voting based on political loyalty, sentiments or personalities.
The ADC criticised the Tinubu administration over what it described as persistent economic hardship, worsening insecurity and shrinking opportunities, questioning why Nigerians should give the ruling party another mandate in 2027.
It also called for increased voter participation, urging Nigerians to obtain and use their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to influence the country’s political direction.
The party presented itself as an alternative to the APC-led government, outlining its proposed campaign message around three priorities: making Nigeria affordable, improving national security and creating jobs.
“If Americans can use their votes to demand better, Nigerians can do the same,” the party said, urging citizens to make their votes count in the next general elections.
The ADC’s appeal comes as political parties intensify preparations and mobilisation ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
