The White House has launched a new 24-hour digital streaming service known as “Trump TV: The Essentials Station”, amid an escalating dispute between the Trump administration and major US news organisations over access to presidential events.

The platform went live on Monday, September 21, offering viewers a continuous stream of videos, presidential remarks, government announcements and other material selected by the White House.

The administration announced the launch on its official X account, describing the service as a platform for major moments from President Donald Trump’s administration, updated in real time.

The first material broadcast included previously recorded footage of Trump delivering a July 3 speech at Mount Rushmore, rather than a live presidential event. The service is available through the White House website and YouTube.

Major TV Networks Suspend Pool Coverage

The launch came on the same day that the five major US television broadcasters involved in the presidential television pool suspended shared coverage of Trump’s events.

ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC normally operate a rotating system in which one broadcaster records presidential events on behalf of other television organisations, particularly when limited space or security arrangements prevent every network from attending.

CNN had been scheduled to handle the television pool on Monday and accompany Trump during his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

However, the White House had recently barred CNN, Politico and MS NOW from its grounds. CNN was consequently prevented from carrying out its scheduled pool assignment.

Rather than appoint another broadcaster to replace CNN, the television pool announced that it would suspend its presidential pool coverage.

In a joint statement, ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC said the public has an interest in receiving independent information about the government and argued that news organisations should not be restricted because of their reporting.

CNN, Politico and MS NOW Sue Administration

The dispute has also moved to court.

CNN, Politico and MS NOW filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration after their journalists were denied access to the White House and had their credentials revoked.

The organisations argue that the restrictions violate constitutional protections for freedom of speech and the press.

The administration has rejected that position, maintaining that White House access is subject to its control and that the restrictions do not prevent the affected organisations from reporting on the president from outside the White House.

The legal dispute remains unresolved.

White House Creates Direct Media Platform

The launch of Trump TV gives the administration a direct channel for distributing footage of the president without depending on the traditional television pool.

That distinction has become central to the dispute. Traditional pool coverage is produced by news organisations and shared among broadcasters, while the new Trump TV stream is produced and controlled by the White House.

The White House has promoted the service as a way for viewers to see major presidential moments that it says may not have received television coverage.

The development therefore marks a significant change in the way footage of presidential activities is being distributed during the ongoing dispute over White House media access.

For now, the television pool suspension and the launch of Trump TV are unfolding alongside the court challenge brought by CNN, Politico and MS NOW, with the legal questions surrounding the White House’s media-access policy yet to be determined by the courts.
