The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Oyo State, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, has criticised Governor Seyi Makinde over industrial actions by medical and dental officers in the state and lecturers at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso.
Alli also pledged to prioritise workers’ welfare, promising prompt payment of salaries, allowances and other entitlements if elected governor in 2027.
His position was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by Bisi Oladele, Director of Media and Publicity of the Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation, in Ibadan.
The statement said medical and dental officers in the state began their strike on Monday, while the LAUTECH branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) commenced an indefinite strike on Thursday.
The campaign organisation attributed the disputes to unresolved welfare issues, including outstanding allowances, salary concerns and the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
It warned that the withdrawal of medical services could further restrict access to healthcare, particularly for residents who depend on public hospitals. It also urged the state government to make emergency arrangements for patients requiring urgent medical attention.
Alli accused Makinde of failing to give sufficient attention to the disputes while pursuing political activities linked to his reported presidential ambition. The allegation was made by his campaign organisation and was not independently established in the report.
The APC candidate said an administration under his leadership would focus on timely payment of workers’ entitlements, engagement with health professionals and improved facilities in public hospitals.
He also appealed to the striking workers to remain open to dialogue.
The strikes have placed renewed attention on workers’ welfare and the delivery of essential public services in Oyo State. The state government’s response to the latest allegations was not included in the reports reviewed.
