The lingering political disagreement between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reportedly divided the party’s 31 state governors into different camps ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to a report by Vanguard, some APC governors are sympathetic to Wike, while others have aligned with Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodimma, as well as Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
Vanguard reported that Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo, Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Kogi Governor Ahmed Ododo are among those reportedly sympathetic to Wike’s position.
On the other side, Uzodimma, AbdulRazaq, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun are reported to be opposed to the minister’s position in the dispute. Several other governors are said to be undecided and are awaiting President Bola Tinubu’s return before taking a definitive position.
The disagreement is linked partly to Wike’s involvement in the political coalition he has described as the Rainbow Coalition. The APC Governors’ Forum recently resolved that its members would not support or endorse political arrangements capable of weakening the party or creating divided loyalty ahead of the 2027 elections.
Uzodimma said the governors would support official APC candidates at all levels and would not endorse candidates contesting under other political platforms where such arrangements could undermine the party.
Wike, however, has rejected the suggestion that his political activities require the endorsement of the APC Governors’ Forum. He has also argued that the opposition from Uzodimma and AbdulRazaq is connected to issues beyond the stated concerns about the coalition.
The FCT minister has particularly clashed with AbdulRazaq over political developments in Kwara State, while his disagreement with Uzodimma has also become increasingly public.
Vanguard further reported that some party leaders have called for restraint as the disagreement widens, while political stakeholders are watching President Tinubu’s expected return and the possible implications for the ruling party’s internal dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
The reports do not indicate that all APC governors have formally taken opposing positions, with several reportedly maintaining a neutral stance at the time of publication.
