Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has reaffirmed his friendship with former governor Peter Obi, insisting that their political disagreements have not affected the relationship between their families.

Soludo made the clarification during an interview with BBC News Igbo on Monday, where he addressed recent exchanges between both camps over political differences and the management of Anambra State’s finances.

The governor described Obi as a close friend, explaining that their families maintained cordial relations despite supporting different political interests.

He also acknowledged that Obi backed another candidate during the last Anambra governorship election, while he contested and won re-election.

Soludo further disclosed that he personally invited Obi to join the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in March 2022 to pursue his presidential ambition ahead of the 2023 general election.

Addressing his controversial 2022 article questioning Obi’s presidential chances, Soludo explained that his concerns at the time centred on the possibility that Obi’s candidacy would divide opposition votes and benefit the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He maintained that political disagreements should not be mistaken for personal hostility, adding that both men remained friends despite their differing political positions.

The comments come amid renewed exchanges between the two political figures over the financial position of Anambra State when Obi left office in 2014 and disagreements surrounding their families’ godparent relationships.
