Spanish football club Real Madrid has apologised to the Chinese people following controversial remarks by its forward, Kylian Mbappé, that reportedly offended many in China.

In a statement released on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the club expressed regret over the comments and reaffirmed its respect for China, its history, culture and citizens, as well as its millions of Chinese supporters.

The club also endorsed the apology previously issued by Mbappé, who acknowledged that his remarks were ill-judged and had hurt people in China and Chinese communities worldwide.

The controversy followed the circulation of a video in which the French international reportedly described a meme depicting his face superimposed on that of former Chinese leader Mao Zedong as the funniest meme he had seen.

Mbappé’s comments triggered a backlash, with several Chinese companies, including beverage maker Dongpeng, dairy producer Mengniu and cheesemaker Milkground, announcing that they were ending their commercial partnerships with the footballer.

There were also reports that Chinese state television had suspended broadcasts of Spanish La Liga matches and removed advertisements featuring the player.

Real Madrid said it remained committed to promoting mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and understanding between cultures, expressing its desire to strengthen its longstanding relationship with Chinese supporters.

The incident highlights the commercial and reputational consequences that public remarks by international sports personalities can have in major global markets.
