Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has commissioned and handed over a newly constructed 42-room accommodation facility to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), in another intervention aimed at easing the difficulties faced by patients and their families.
The facility, funded and constructed by the Borno State Government, is designed primarily to accommodate relatives and visitors of patients receiving treatment at the teaching hospital.
Many patients treated at UMTH come from communities far from Maiduguri and neighbouring areas, making accommodation a major challenge for family members who need to remain close to their loved ones during treatment.
Speaking during the commissioning, Governor Zulum said the project was part of his administration’s broader effort to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve the experience of residents seeking medical attention.
Zulum’s wider support for UMTH
The 42-room facility is the latest in a series of interventions by the Borno Government at the federal teaching hospital.
The state had previously provided ₦100 million to support medical consumables and other critical needs at UMTH.
Zulum’s administration has also constructed 24 three-bedroom residential apartments for medical personnel, intended to address accommodation challenges and enable health workers to live closer to the hospital.
In addition, the governor approved ₦1 billion to support kidney transplant and maternal health services at UMTH, while the hospital received another ₦500 million intervention following the 2024 flood disaster.
UMTH welcomes intervention
The Chief Medical Director of UMTH, Professor Ahmed Ahidjo, commended the governor for his continued support for the hospital.
According to him, the interventions have contributed to improving the hospital’s operations, infrastructure and working environment for medical personnel.
The latest project reflects the state government’s approach of supporting federal institutions operating within Borno when their services have a direct impact on residents.
UMTH serves as a major referral and specialist healthcare centre for Borno and the wider North-East region, making support for the institution significant to patients who travel from across the region for treatment.
The commissioning of the 42-room patients’ lodge therefore adds another layer of support to healthcare delivery at UMTH, while providing families accompanying patients with a place to stay during medical treatment.
