US President Donald Trump has sparked fresh controversy after suggesting that the strategically important Strait of Hormuz should be renamed the “Trump Strait”, as military tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to escalate.
Trump made the proposal in a post on his Truth Social platform, arguing that the waterway was now under US control.
The US president questioned whether the Strait of Hormuz should be renamed in his honour, adding that it would be “hotter” than ever under the proposed name.
The comment came against the backdrop of the ongoing US-Iran conflict, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining a major flashpoint between the two countries.
Trump later appears to walk back suggestion
Hours after making the proposal, Trump appeared to indicate that he may not have been entirely serious about changing the name.
Channels Television reported that the president later suggested the comment was made partly in jest, although he continued to insist that the United States had control over the strategically important waterway.
The Strait is internationally known as the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow maritime passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
Why the Strait matters
The waterway is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, making developments around it a major concern for international markets.
The ongoing conflict has already placed shipping in the region under significant pressure, while military confrontations involving the US and Iran have raised concerns about the security of vessels travelling through the area.
Trump’s latest statement therefore carries significance beyond its unusual wording, coming at a time when Washington is seeking to assert control over the waterway amid its confrontation with Tehran.
A familiar approach to geographical names
The proposal also follows Trump’s previous efforts to promote changes to internationally recognised geographical names.
During his second presidency, Trump has pushed for changes including the US government’s adoption of “Gulf of America” for the body of water traditionally known internationally as the Gulf of Mexico.
The proposed “Trump Strait” name, however, would face a much different situation because the Strait of Hormuz is an internationally recognised waterway rather than a geographic feature located exclusively within US territory.
Any suggestion by the US president would therefore not, by itself, automatically change the name used internationally.
For now, the Strait remains the Strait of Hormuz, while Trump’s suggestion has added another unusual political dimension to an already tense confrontation between the United States and Iran.
The proposal comes as fighting continues and international concern grows over the potential consequences of further escalation in and around the strategically vital waterway.
